Indiana Vassilev Earns First-Ever USMNT Call-Up for Winter Camp

Former Savannah United standout and current St. Louis CITY SC midfielder Indiana Vassilev has reached a monumental career milestone—earning his first call-up to the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) winter camp. The camp, which began on January 7 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, marks a pivotal moment as the team prepares for its 2025 schedule.

Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Vassilev’s soccer journey started with Savannah United, where he developed his skills and laid the foundation for his professional career. Soccer runs in the Vassilev family—Indiana’s father, Dencho Vassilev, is currently a coach for Savannah United, shaping the next generation of players in the same community where Indiana’s own journey began.

Before making his mark with St. Louis CITY SC, Vassilev had an impressive run as a full-time professional with the English Premier League’s Aston Villa. His time at Aston Villa included a loan spell at Inter Miami, followed by his move to St. Louis. Since being selected by St. Louis CITY SC in the 2022 MLS Expansion Draft, Vassilev has demonstrated remarkable consistency. Over the past two seasons, he’s contributed seven goals in back-to-back MLS regular seasons, including tying his career-high with three goals in 2024. He also set a personal record with four goals across all competitions last season.

Vassilev’s steady rise to the senior national team began with his involvement in youth national team camps, starting with the U-16 squad. He gained widespread recognition with the U-17 team during the 2017 World Cup, where the United States made an impressive run to the quarterfinals. Over the course of his youth international career, Vassilev made 34 appearances and scored five goals.

For Savannah United alumni and local soccer fans, Vassilev’s achievement is a moment of immense pride. His journey—from local fields to the international stage—highlights the incredible talent emerging from the Savannah soccer community. And with his father continuing to play a vital role in Savannah United, this milestone is all the more special for the Vassilev family.

Mark your calendars for January 18, and join us in cheering on Vassilev and the USMNT as they take on Venezuela. Savannah will be watching proudly as one of our own represents the city on the world stage!
